Artwork Inspired by Picture Book Stories

A Wandering Orangutan is a series of picture books set against the backdrop of environmental conservation. The story presents a fictional world composed of various social symbols. However, when reading the picture books, the narrative is so intuitive that it’s difficult to discern the deeper meaning behind the work—which is why the idea of creating accompanying artwork was conceived.

This time, we’ll talk about the “canned food” piece from Episodes 2–14. Episode 2 depicts scenes from everyday life, and the concept for the artwork is inspired by currency. In daily life, currency is a tool that allows you to get what you want. The artwork features the canned food from the story and includes a pull tab so that the piece can mimic the action of opening a can. The intention is to express the “instant gratification” mindset prevalent in today’s society, where everyone is accustomed to speed and convenience—quick notes and “lazy person’s guides”—allowing them to get what they want instantly, just like canned food, which is ready to eat the moment you open it. Then the name of this program “Instanism” came out.

These 14 days were an experiment; aside from creating, they also helped me clarify a lot of my thoughts. I really feel like I should plan a trip like this every year.
